【Ōita, Beppu City】Oniyama Jigoku (Hell)

A must-see in Beppu tourism is the “Beppu Hell Tour,” which involves visiting the 7 different hells (hot spring source viewing facilities). Oniyama Jigoku is one of them, and it has a unique atmosphere that sets it apart from the other hells.

About: Oniyama Jigoku

Oniyama Jigoku, also known as ‘Crocodile Hell,’ is one of the Beppu Hell Tour attractions. The main feature here are the crocodiles, which are raised using the heat from the hot springs. Around 70 crocodiles inhabit the area, and their powerful presence overwhelm visitors. Surrounded by steam rising from the hot springs, the sight of these crocodiles swimming leisurely is truly spectacular.

Highlights

At Oniyama Hell, visitors can first enjoy the powerful and impressive hellish landscape. The ‘Crocodile Hell,’ which is the main attraction here, is must-see. There is also an exhibition hall where you can view the taxidermy of the first crocodile, ‘Ichirou,’ and its massive size is truly overwhelming.

If you have time, it’s recommended to complete the full Beppu Hell Tour, which include all 7 hells. Each one has a completely unique character, making the experience enjoyable. Among them: the Sea Hell, Blood Pond Hell, Tornado Hell, and White Pond Hell are designated as national scenic spots.
