Nanshoso is known for its beautiful Japanese garden and traditional architectural style. Built in 1885 as the residence of a Morioka-born businessman, Nanshoso is now officially designated by Morioka City as a ‘protected garden and important landscaping structure,’ with the garden also being a registered as a national monument.
It has been used for exhibitions, coming of age, tea, and pre-wedding ceremonies, and events such as Shichigosan (celebrating children turning 3,5,7 years old), making it a well-known place for the local community.

One of the best ways to spend time at Nanshoso is to take a leisurely stroll through the gardens. At sunset, the garden is even more beautiful and peaceful.
The tatami room served as the model for the famous NHK drama series Dondohare. The spacious, atmospheric building is truly a sight to behold. The wide corridors, lit by sunlight filtering through the trees, offer visitors the chance to enjoy matcha green tea and Japanese sweets in this dramatic setting.
